“Architecture is the art  which so disposes and
adorns the edifices raised by man, that the sight of them may contribute to his mental health, power, and pleasure.

We here at Bluestem are of the mind that stone work should be thick and heavy. This is reflected in our materials. We promote and encourage real stone work. We produce full size building stone, architectural details and our veneers are seldom smaller than four inches. We recommend using gutted corners with the four inch veneer in order to maintain the look and feel of full size building blocks. The definition of full size being eight inches and larger like the buildings constructed here at the turn of the century. In Kansas at that time stone work was done to create a livable, stout and sturdy structure. Even the livestock lived in full size stone structures.

We understand that these days it is not practical to build walls completely of stone but it is still possible to recreate a look and style that emulates the old craftsmanship and does honor to the medium with which we work. We can accomplish this through the combination of construction techniques. A hybrid of old and new. These modern techniques combined with the beautiful details we recreate modeled on the work of the old master craftsmen create a look and feel that is timeless and elegant. These styles can not be reproduced with thin veneers or cultured stone and are of a quality that is quickly disappearing in the modern landscape of construction. This is the style which we strive to preserve and recreate.

We have only a few products. We specialize in native limestone. Our quarry is in the area of “Green horn Limestone” deposited during the Permian era twenty five million years ago.

The region we quarry is commonly referred to as the “Post Rock area”. These products are cut and quarried on our site in north central Kansas. For a catalog of our products please click on the Quarried Stone category below.

In our spare time we study what remains of the old masters work by visiting historic sites in the area and do our very best to do justice to them and honor what they teach us. We are fortunate to have these sites and do what we can to help preserve them for future generations. Unfortunately, they are still being demolished at an astounding rate.

If you are interested in preservation or reclamation please visit our alter ego at http://www.stonecottagefarm.com or click on the Reclaimed Stone category below.

For a catalog of styles based on these very structures please continue to our catalogs of quarried stone products and historic design.

“When we build let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, “See! This our father did for us.” ~ John Ruskin
